How to create shortcuts to start your web browser on Private or Incognito Window

t is quite often that we would not necessarily want anyone else knowing about the website URLs or downloads performed on one’s PC. For sure, we may have noticed an Incognito or Private Window option on every web Browser. Some might have used it, whereas other might not even have the knowledge about its restrictions preloaded with the Private or Incognito Window codes by the developers. The Incognito will not open by default on any of the known browsers – Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Microsoft Edge – users have to click on the option of Incognito window to avail the features associated with it, whether on Desktops, Laptops, Touch-Screen-PCs or Smart Phones around the World. However, the tricks and process to make incognito window the default browser is yet to be discovered by a large set of people.

Before we proceed, it is important to clear our concepts regarding the incognito window. We mention,

1) Incognito window – for Google Chrome

2) Private window – for Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer

3) InPrivate window – for Microsoft Edge

Firstly, create a shortcut for browsers on the Desktop. The browsers for Windows Operating System are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Edge.

For Google Chrome-

Right click on the shortcut icon of Google Chrome. A menu box with options will pop-up on the screen; Select the last option ‘properties’ and follow the below steps.

  1. A dialog box with 6 tabs will display on the screen. Select the shortcut tab and look for the Target box, which is also editable.
  2. Edit the box by placing the insertion point cursor at the end of the long URL. Delete the last character i.e. double quotation mark – and type there `” -incognito` (double quotation mark, space, hyphen, and incognito).
  3. Click OK to apply changes.
  4. Restart the PC/Laptop/Desktop.
  5. After restart, open the Google Chrome browser to verify the changes.

For Mozilla Firefox

Right click on the shortcut icon of Mozilla Firefox. A menu box with options will open on the screen. Select the last option ‘properties’ and follow the below steps.

  1. A dialog box with 6 tabs will display on the screen. Select the Shortcut tab and look for the Target box, which is also editable.
  2. Edit the box by placing the insertion point cursor at the end of the long URL. Delete the last character i.e. double quotation mark – (“) and then type (“-private) double quotation mark, space, hyphen, and private.
  3. Click OK to apply changes.
  4. Restart the PC/Laptop/Desktop.
  5. After the restart, open the Mozilla Firefox browser to verify the changes.

For Internet Explorer-

Right click on the shortcut icon of Internet Explorer. A menu box with options will open on the screen. Select the last option ‘properties’ and follow the below steps.

  1. A dialog box with 6 tabs will display on the screen. Select the Shortcut tab and look for the Target box, which is also editable.
  2. Edit the box by placing the insertion point cursor at the end of the long URL. Delete the last character i.e. double quotation mark – and type there `” -private` (double quotation mark, space, hyphen, and private).
  3. Click OK to apply changes.
  4. Restart the PC/Laptop/Desktop.
  5. After the restart, open the Internet Explorer browser to verify the changes.

For Microsoft Edge- (Applicable for Windows 10 PCs)

Open the Microsoft Edge browser. Click or tap (for touchscreen PCs) the options (in three dots on the top right corner of the browser). A menu will open, where just click the “Inprivate” option and follow the below steps.

  1. A New window will open with Inprivate in blue, written on the top.
  2. Open any web page on the InPrivate Window, for example, www.xyz123.com. When the page completely load-up tap menu, which is there on the top right corner of the browser. Choose the option “Pin this page to start”.
  3. Find the InPrivate window on the Start Menu. (Note: Do not rename the InPrivate window icon)
  4. Click the pinned icon to open an InPrivate Window directly on Microsoft Edge. (Note: The Inprivate Window may open the saved page i.e. www.xyz123.comInprivate , however, one can edit it and open the required the web page or site.)

For Opera- (We have added the shortcut creation steps for Opera Browser for the ease of our viewers)

Right click on the shortcut icon of Opera browser. A menu box with options will open on the screen. Select the last option ‘properties’ and follow the below steps.

  1. A dialog box with 6 tabs will display on the screen. Select the Shortcut tab and look for the Target box, which is also editable.
  2. Edit the box by placing the insertion point cursor at the end of the long URL. Delete the last character i.e. double quotation mark – and type there `” -private` (double quotation mark, space, hyphen, and private).
  3. Click OK to apply changes.
  4. Restart the PC/Laptop/Desktop.
  5. After a restart, open the Opera browser to verify the changes.

There is no need of any screenshot for Opera Browser as we follow the same steps that are mentioned above.
